So I just went to the library. Normally I go, pick out my books, check them out, and leave. Today I went for the express purpose of sketching some ideas for this week's
arteests challenge. I didn't have much luck with that. It's harder than I thought it'd be.
However, I did find something interesting. This morning, I was talking to Lolli about a book I used to read a lot, an old favorite, called "The Egypt Game" by Zilpha Keatley Snyder. It was published in '67. After talking about it with Lolli, I thought, "Well, why not see if the library has a copy!"
At the end of the book, the last line is "Melanie? What do you know about gypsies?" As I searched in the library database for key words "Egypt Game," the first thing that popped up was "The Gypsy Game." The Gypsy Game? thought I. How odd. I wonder if that's in any way related to The Egypt Game. Turns out, yes. Zilpha Keatley Snyder published "The Gypsy Game" in 1997, 30 years after the first one. I checked them both out. Re-reading "The Egypt Game" for the first time in years, I'm struck again by the writing style. You can tell that it was written in the '60s. In addition to the use of the word "Negro," the narrator also mentions the fact that April's father died in the Korean War before she could get to know him.
Anyway, I'm pretty excited. Re-reading an old favorite is always nice, and I hope "The Gypsy Game" is as good as its predecessor. (Predecessor isn't exactly the right word to use here, but it's the only one I could come up with.)
