I had to read Native Son once in high school and once again in college, and I despised it both times. I just couldn't connect with the characters. I hated them all. That's kind of how I felt about Confederacy of Dunces (though I did like it a little better than Native Son)...I know we weren't exactly supposed to like Ignatius J. Reilly, but all I wanted to do the entire book was wring his neck and chuck him into a vat of rabid wolverines.
