There's a reason I went into the sciences instead of literature and English and writing. Those kinds of analyses that you had to do were so... counterintuitive to my way of thinking. I'd read something and take it at literal face value and then everyone would be "No, it represents man's conflict against nature and is a metaphor for the author's struggles as a child" and I'd be "???"
The same can be said for musical lyrics. It's no different from epic or lyrical poetry- telling stories, representing some kind of subtle tale or lesson or metaphor, all of which escapes my Neanderthalian level of undertsanding. GRAAARRGHGHG! HULK SMASH PUNY CONFUSING LITERATURE! GIVE HULK PORN!
I'm probably not the most well-read individual myself. Some Shakespeare, some "classic lit", some political discourse, and then a whole buttload of fantasy and sci-fi. Why? Because for me, reading is entertainment. I read for fun. I want to be entertained and therefore the story has to be exciting and attention-holding. Spending five hundred pages talking about a ship chasing a big white whale and then using about fifteen of them for the actual hunt makes me a sad bored panda.
